OU Engineers’ Club and other organizations will host Tunnels of Terror Tuesday evening in the Carson Engineering Center.
Held in the tunnels beneath the engineering quad, Tunnels of Terror is the largest fall event hosted by Engineers’ Club.
The tunnels were built around a decade ago to transport goods and allow students a warmer walk to class during cold months. They connect four of the five major engineering buildings in the engineering quad, including Gallogly Hall, Carson Engineering Center, Engineering Practice Facility and Devon Energy Hall.
The event will feature scare actors as well as scary props and decorations. A waiver is required to enter the event. According to OU Engineers’ Club events coordinator Jaydeep Pimpalapure, attendees who are overwhelmed in the tunnels can use the safe word “Kiwi” to be taken to the nearest exit.
Each of the four tunnels will be themed, which Pimpalapure said will be a surprise.
“It seems really cool making a haunted house in the tunnels,” Pimpalapure said. “Two of the tunnels are just concrete tubes, and you can have a lot of creativity with that.”
Engineers’ Club has partnered with eight organizations to host the event, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, Alpha Sigma Kappa, Alpha Phi Omega, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASCE Concrete Canoe Team, Engineers Serving Others, Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
To run the event, two organizations are assigned to each tunnel, each having a “tunnel lead” who corrals the organizations to plan the theme.
“It's not just me running the show, it’s a huge collaborative effort,” Pimpalapure said. “I would be in a much tougher spot if the other officers and volunteer organizations did not help.”
Pimpalapure said the event offers a chance to highlight the hard work of the involved organizations.
“I’m excited because this event is one of the best ways to showcase not only Engineers’ Club and our excellence as an organization but to showcase multiple different organizations,” Pimpalapure said.
Tunnels of Terror will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday starting at the south side entrance of Carson Engineering Center. The event is free and open to the public.
