Ten OU football players were named to the Southeastern Conference’s All-SEC teams on Tuesday.
Three Sooners were named to the All-SEC First Team, with five on the second team, and two on the third team. The teams were voted on by SEC head coaches.
Senior defensive lineman R Mason Thomas was named to the All-SEC first team this year after making the second team last year. Thomas registered 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss, despite missing OU’s final three games of the season with an injury. He scored his only touchdown of the season on a fumble recovery against Tennessee.
Redshirt junior kicker Tate Sandell and punter Grayson Miller joined Thomas on the All-SEC First Team. Sandell went 23-of-24 on field goals this season, with a longest of 55 yards. He is also in contention for the Lou Groza award, given to the nation’s best kicker. Grayson Miller punted 54 times for 2494 yards, an average of 46.2 yards per punt.
Two players from the OU offense were named to the All-SEC second team. Redshirt junior receiver Isaiah Sategna III and redshirt senior offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu received honors for the Sooners. Sategna was OU’s leading receiver this season, posting 948 yards and seven touchdowns on 65 receptions. Nwaiwu started all 12 games on the offensive line and was a finalist for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top player who began as a walk-on.
Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Taylor Wein, junior defensive back Peyton Bowen and redshirt junior long snapper Ben Anderson were also named to the All-SEC second team. Wein recorded six sacks and 14 tackles for loss this year, while Peyton Bowen logged 44 tackles and two interceptions. Anderson earned All-SEC honors for the second time, after making the third team last year.
Senior tight end Jaren Kanak and sophomore defensive back Eli Bowen made the All-SEC third team. Kanak, who switched from linebacker to tight end this season, caught 40 passes for 522 yards. Eli Bowen intercepted two passes, including an 86-yard interception returned for a touchdown in OU’s regular-season game against Alabama.
SEC individual award winners will be released Wednesday, and the All-Freshman Team will be announced Thursday.
Next, OU will kick off the first round of the College Football Playoffs against Alabama at 7 p.m. Dec. 19. at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on ABC and ESPN.
