OU athletic director Roger Denny announced Porter Moser will be retained as head coach of OU men’s basketball.

Denny made the decision ahead of the SEC Tournament Wednesday and informed Moser Saturday morning, according to reporting by The Oklahoman.
Denny and Moser reportedly spoke about the need to increase resources through the program, specifically name, image and likeness deals for players.
In a Saturday morning post on X, Denny wrote that OU athletics has a long history of embodying an underdog spirit.
“It’s on Coach Moser to make sure that our team’s performance continues to meet and exceed our resources for the program. He’s done that and I’m confident he will continue to,” Denny wrote. “But an underdog spirit will only take us so far. It’s my job to ensure that our resources match our expectations. We haven’t held up our end of that bargain. From NIL to staffing and beyond, we’re going to fix that.”

Denny told The Oklahoman that despite the team’s struggle, Moser has been successful with limited resources from the athletic department.
“We're not holding up our end of the bargain. And so, Priority 1 has to be to fix that and get our resources and expectations and performance all aligned,” Denny told The Oklahoman. “And from that point, we can then decide what the right path for our program is, but we're not at that point. We're not at that point because of what we're doing administratively, not because of what Coach Moser is doing on the court.”
Men’s basketball has consistently underperformed under Moser, who joined OU in 2021. Before 2025, the team had not qualified for the NCAA tournament for three years, and never under Moser. In its over 115 year history, men’s basketball has never won an NCAA Division I national championship and has not reached the Final Four in a decade.
OU won eight of its last 11 games before falling to Arkansas in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament Friday.
