Oklahoma women's tennis: Sooners fall short to Texas Tech, 4-3

Brigante Forehand

Communications senior Christiana Brigante uses a forehand to return the ball to her Arkansas opponent Feb. 2.

The Sooners came back from 3-0 to tie the match before falling to No. 13 Texas Tech, 4-3 Friday night.

In doubles play, the Sooners dropped the point to the Red Raiders. Senior Simran Sethi and freshman Camila Romero struck first for the Sooners, winning 6-4 from the No. 3 line. After seniors Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp lost in a tiebreaker from the two spot, 7-6 (4), it came down to court one where sophomore Jasmine Asghar and senior Christie Brigante fell in a tiebreaker as well.

Oklahoma fought back despite going into singles play behind. The Sooners quickly fell behind 3-0 in losses from Romero at the four and Stripp at the six before Brigante put the Sooners on the board with a 7-5, 7-6 (7), straight-set win from court three.

No. 41 Miyazaki kept the momentum going, bringing the score within one and defeating No. 17 Talaba, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, from the No. 1 spot. In an exciting 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5, from the two line, Asghar defeated No. 46 Maltby and tied up the match at 3-all. Play came down to Sethi on court 5, where she fought hard but fell short in a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4), defeat.

“I’m super proud of them,” said coach Audra Cohen. “To give themselves opportunities to win on every court is always out goal when we come out here, and for them to come out here and lay their heart on the court and give themselves an opportunity to win the match and have it come down to a 7-6 in the third, that’s just a testament to how much talent these girls really have.”

Oklahoma moves to 12-10 on the season and 2-4 in Big 12 play. They return to play on Sunday, hosting TCU at 2 p.m. at the Headington Family Tennis in their final home match of the season.
