OU baseball falls to North Carolina 14-4 in Chapel Hill Regional finals

Oklahoma (38-22) fell to North Carolina (45-13) 14-4 Monday in the Chapel Hill Regional to end the Sooners’ season.

The Sooners were in a 3-0 hole before they put the bats in their hands and played behind all game on Monday.

For the second game in a row, OU decided to throw a bullpen game, as senior right-hander Reid Hensley started the game and gave up three runs in 2.1 innings pitched. The bleeding would then expand as sophomore left-hander Gavyn Jones came in for Hensley and gave up an additional two runs, while only recording one out.

OU tried to battle back, as freshman infielder Drew Dickerson hit his third home run of the regional in the bottom of the second. Dickerson only had two home runs going into the weekend but hit three across the five games OU played in Chapel Hill.

The Sooners were able to limit the Tar Heels offense from putting up a bigger lead, as junior right-hander Dylan Tate tossed four innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen with five strikeouts.

Tate was only limited to two games this season due to injury but flashed his arm talent with six strikeouts across five innings pitched this year.

After senior left-hander James Hitt gave up a run in 0.2 innings pitched, head coach Skip Johnson turned to freshman right-hander Jackson Kircher, who the Tar Heels tagged for two home runs in the eighth inning.

Overall, the Sooners used seven pitchers in Monday’s loss.

OU’s offense wasn’t able to do a ton of damage against North Carolina starter Ryan Lynch, who gave the Sooners fits with his slider all game with six strikeouts in five innings.

The only other runs for the Sooners came in the seventh and ninth innings when Jason Walk hit a solo home run to trim the North Carolina lead, and Easton Carmichael lashed an RBI single.

The Sooners’ inaugural season in the SEC comes to an end, with the program being eliminated in the regional round for a third consecutive season.
