No. 1 OU (46-6, 18-3 SEC) edged out No. 11 Georgia (34-16, 10-11 SEC) 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep in its final home series of the season.

On a day that also served as senior day, the Sooners battled back from an early deficit and leaned on clutch hitting, fielding and pitching depth to secure the win.

Here are the takeaways:

Sooners rally past early deficit to secure sweep

Georgia struck first in the series finale, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and putting early pressure on OU. However, the Sooners responded quickly.

A run-batted-in single from junior utility player Ella Parker cut into the deficit, and OU regained control in the fourth inning. A two-run home run from freshman outfielder Kai Minor gave the Sooners the lead, followed by an RBI from sophomore infielder Gabbie Garcia to extend the advantage.

Georgia tied the game later with a two-run home run, setting up a tense finish.

In the sixth inning, Garcia delivered the decisive moment, launching a go-ahead home run that ultimately secured the 6-5 victory.

OU used four pitchers down the stretch to hold off Georgia and close out the win.

“I just think we feel united and are keeping our mind on the end goal but taking everything and every pitch one thing at a time,” Garcia said.

Wells breaks OU single-season home run record, closes in on NCAA history

Freshman catcher Kendall Wells continued her historic season throughout the series.

In game one, Wells hit her 35th home run of the season, breaking OU’s single-season record previously held by Jocelyn Alo (34 in 2022).

She followed it up with a two-run home run in game two, continuing her dominant freshman campaign.

After surpassing the NCAA freshman single-season home run record, Wells is now just one home run shy of tying the NCAA single-season record of 37, set by Arizona shortstop Laura Espinoza in 1995.

With three regular-season games remaining, Wells has  opportunities to continue rewriting the record books.

Regular-season finale presents big test

OU will close out the regular season on the road against No. 10 Texas A&M (35-14, 15-6 SEC) in a three-game series.

Head coach Patty Gasso acknowledged the challenge ahead.

“This will be our toughest challenge, going to Texas A&M, because they have something at stake; we have something at stake,” Gasso said. “You could rank us number one, but when you’re going into Texas A&M, they’re very, very good, very well coached. We’re going to have our hands full, so we’re going in as an underdog. I believe that.”

The Sooners remain atop the Southeastern Conference standings and are looking to enter the SEC Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky, as the No. 1 seed with wins against Texas A&M.

Next, OU will take on Texas A&M at 8 p.m. April 30 at Davis Diamond on SEC Network.
