OU freshman catcher Kendall Wells broke the NCAA single-season freshman home run record Saturday, launching her 31st homer in the second game of the Red River Rivalry series against Texas.

Wells, who has been highly regarded by both her teammates and head coach Patty Gasso, accomplished the feat in her 43rd game of the season. The record-setting home run broke a four-way tie at 30 homers between former Sooners Jocelyn Alo and Lauren Chamberlain, along with Hawaii’s Kelly Majam.
Wells now has 12 games remaining to chase the NCAA single-season home run record of 37, set by former Arizona Wildcat Laura Espinoza in 1997. Espinoza reached the mark in a 72-game season, giving Wells the chance to eclipse it in nearly 17 fewer games.
Wells' chase for the record continues as OU faces Texas in game three of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Red and Charline McCombs Field on ESPN.
