OU junior defensive back Eli Bowen looks to build on the foundation he established over his first two years while taking a more vocal approach to leadership.

The transition into becoming a leader on a top-ranked defense has been a change for Bowen, who says it’s unlike him to voice his opinion.

“I’m not usually talkative, and I'm not a big leadership guy with words. I'm more by action,” Bowen said Monday. “(Being an upperclassman) called me to be more talkative and help other guys to get their process in getting help with connecting the playbook with each call.”

Bowen has the unique opportunity to lean on his older brother, Peyton, for guidance as he steps into his expanded role. The junior recognized how rare it is to share the field with a sibling for as long as they have.

“Sometimes, we take it for granted how fortunate and blessed we are to be playing with each other, and we'll never see what it's like to not play with each other in college,” Bowen said.

Bowen recorded two interceptions in each of his first two seasons, highlighted by a pick-six against Alabama last season.

His brother, Peyton, recorded his best season as a Sooner in 2025, recording two interceptions and seven pass deflections from the safety spot, including one that helped seal a key OU win against Alabama.

With both brothers settling into key roles, Bowen took a moment Monday to reflect on their journey.

“I think (this is the best we’ve been),” Bowen said. “I think we ended the year strongly.”

The junior will look to build on a strong start to his OU career heading into the 2026 season. He is set to see extended action in the spring game at noon Saturday at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
