ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior quarterback Baker Mayfield had 308 total yards and four touchdowns as No. 3 Oklahoma beat No. 11 TCU 41-17 in the Big 12 Championship game.
The Sooners (12-1, 8-1 Big 12) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter thanks in part to a fumble recovery for a touchdown by sophomore linebacker Caleb Kelly.
TCU (10-3, 7-2 Big 12) rallied to cut the lead to 24-17 at halftime, but Oklahoma scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Senior tight end Mark Andrews and sophomore receivers Mykel Jones and Marquise Brown caught touchdowns for the Sooners, andjunior kicker Austin Seibert tacked on two field goals.
With the win, Oklahoma is almost assured of a spot in the College Football Playoff. The playoff field will be announced on Sunday at 11 a.m. central time. If selected, the Sooners will play in either the Rose Bowl or the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
It is unclear what bowl game TCU will attend. Depending on their final ranking by the College Football Playoff committee, the Horned Frogs may be eligible for a slot in one of the other New Year’s Six games.
