Justin Harrington underwent season-ending ACL surgery on Thursday, coach Brent Venables confirmed after OU's 50-20 win over Iowa State.
Venables said the redshirt senior will attempt to gain another season of eligibility.
"Hate that for Justin, but he's going to try to get another year," Venables said postgame. "It looks like that'll likely take place but that has to go through its process after the season."
Harrington wore a brace on his left knee during the second half of the Sooners' 28-11 win over SMU on Sept. 9 and was seen with a wrap on his knee at practice two days later. He hasn't played since OU's game against SMU.
Harrington was named the Sooners' starting cheetah ahead of the season. Sophomore Dasan McCullough started at cheetah in OU's previous two games, including its 50-20 win over Iowa State on Saturday.
"Justin is a great leader," Venables said. "If he stood up here right now in front of a mic, y'all would just melt with his perspective, his toughness, his love for his teammates. He's a special guy and he'll be a big part of helping us lead and keep encouraging our guys and bringing out the best in them."
