Student Congress changing policies, including more student voice

OU’s Undergraduate Student Congress members considered bills concerning SGA salaries and the fall student holiday at their their meeting of the semester Tuesday.

The first bill, the “Salaries and Stipends Amendment Act of 2013” proposes to increase the salaries of both the SGA staff assistant and the budget and account representative by $1.20. Both increases are for the 2013-2014 school year. The salary raises will come from the SGA general fund.

“Basically, the idea is we’re giving a raise to our hard-working workers who deserve one,” Chair John Montgomery said.

After some discussion between Rep. Andrew Carlough, business district, and Montgomery, author of the bill, about technical errors in the bill, student congress passed it 19-0.

The second bill, the “Fall Holiday Referendum Act” proposes adding a referendum to the 2013 fall general election ballot allowing students to vote on when to have the annual fall student holiday for 2014.

“We’re trying to look for their input on the student holiday we get to allocate every fall,” Montgomery said.

The Board of Regents grants SGA the authority to make one day in the fall semester a student holiday. Traditionally, SGA sets the break for the Friday prior to the Red River Rivalry football game.

The options to appear on the ballot will be the Friday before the Red River Rivalry football game, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Monday after Thanksgiving, and a write-in option.

The bill passed 16-3, which means approval from the Graduate Student Senate will allow the option to choose the fall 2014 student holiday to appear on the ballot.

There will also be new voting software for the fall general election, called Votenet, which will include a write-in option.
