Hurts Donuts in Norman was shut down this month by the Oklahoma Tax Commission due to non-payment of delinquent tax.
The donut shop, located on Campus Corner and open 24/7, was known for its specialty donuts and coffee menu.
The Campus Corner location was the second Hurts Donuts shop and one of an eventual 24 locations in 11 states for founder and OU alumnus Tim Clegg.
Operations first began in 2014, but closed in 2020 due to difficulties regarding COVID-19. Two years after its closure, the shop opened under new ownership apart from Clegg.
The Tulsa and Oklahoma City locations are still open.
Oklahoma business owners are required to collect sales tax from customers that is then paid to the state. According to state statutes, the Oklahoma Tax Commission is legally authorized to close any business that fails to timely file and pay its sales tax three times in two years.
The commission is required to give notice to owners prior to closing the business. To avoid closure, businesses can pay the delinquent tax with interest or penalties in full or enter a payment agreement with the commission, per state statutes.
Hurts Donuts is the second chain location in Norman to close its doors. Nashbird, an Oklahoma-based hot chicken chain, closed three of its four locations in January, including its Norman restaurant on Main Street.
Three other locally owned businesses have recently shut down or scaled back operations, including 405 Burger Bar, Penny Hill Deli and Equity Brewing Company.
