Jacobson Hall fire

The Norman Fire Department responded to a fire outside Jacobson Hall on Jan. 2.

The Norman Fire Department responded to a fire outside Jacobson Hall Tuesday morning.

A tar kettle — which heats tar, asphalt and similar materials for waterproofing tasks — caught on fire, according to Jenny Jones, spokesperson for the Norman Fire Department. Jones said the building is currently undergoing updates to its roof.

Jones said there appeared to be no damage to the inside of the building, and the fire was contained to the outside.

Jacobson Hall is home to the Jones Family Welcome Center and the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. The center is currently under a renovation and expansion project after a $15 million donation from OU alumni Jonny and Brenda Jones. The renovations began in the summer of 2023.

The fire is extinguished but still smoking according to Jones. No injuries were reported with the incident.
