Photo essay: OU-South Carolina football game

COLUMBIA, S.C. — This summer, my mentor told me I needed to spend the year doing things for my future and for myself. These photo essays are what I am taking with me and what I am giving back to OU Daily.

One thing the Sooners had was vengeance. If something wasn't done the first time, it was going to be handled the second time.

I am not sure if it was the Gamecocks' way of playing or the aftermath from the loss against Texas last Saturday, but the Oklahoma defense was not hesitant to respond to South Carolina's offense.

Senior defensive lineman Gracen Halton missed the chance to tackle South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. In the very next play, he and redshirt junior linebacker Kip Lewis tackled the redshirt sophomore quarterback.

Oklahoma was responsive to the point of being called for 10 penalties for a loss of 98 yards.

The Sooners' offense was definitely more prepared this week compared to their loss to the Longhorns. Redshirt junior John Mateer made it clear that he hadn't expected last week's poor performance, but the South Carolina game needed to be played.

Freshman running back Tory Blaylock was a piece of consistency throughout the game. He was quick to get the team to 82 rushing yards before halftime. The freshman seems to be a consistency each game and the Oklahoma fans seem to be eager to see what’s in his SEC future.

Last week I noted that OU head coach Brent Venables seemed to be stuck in the game against Texas, but this week was visually different. Venables was all over the field.

The coach said in the postgame press conference that football will punish you if you don't deliver. It was apparent that the team's goal Saturday was to deliver on multiple levels.

It was pretty evident South Carolina fans were not satisfied with their team's offense during the game. At the Williams-Brice Stadium you would expect to hear chanting for the Gamecocks' mascot, but the loudest cheer came as fans were screaming, "Fire Shula!"

Sellers had some communicative moments with teammates, but with boos ringing through the stadium the Gamecocks couldn't get to 100 total yards after three quarters. South Carolina has lost four of it last five games, and the success of the team may just start with the critical plays and basics that the Gamecocks were lacking Saturday.
