Bizzell Memorial Library will remain open 24 hours during finals week to give students a safe, convenient place to study.

These extended hours begin at noon Sunday, Dec. 15, and continue to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.

Pre-ultrasound sophomore Brooke Mincey said the library's late hours fit her schedule well.

"I like to study late at night instead of waking up early in the morning," she said. "I appreciate that the library strives to fit the needs of students."

As an added bonus, the Bookmark coffee shop will remain open from Sunday evening through Wednesday evening for late-night cravings.

Library services such as reference and computer assistance and the copy shop will not be available during the extended hours. However, students and faculty can check out reserve books or library materials, said Debra Engel, director of public services for University Libraries.

OU police officers will be on duty in the library during the extended hours, Engel said.

Anyone entering the library between midnight and 7:30 a.m. will be asked to present a valid OU identification card as another added security precaution, Engel said.

This is the third semester the library has opened for 24 hours during finals week.

Political science senior Edward Fonseca said he has taken advantage of the extended hours for all three semesters.

"It's definitely a better place to go and study since most people in college have roommates and the environment at home doesn't always lend itself for studying," he said.

Fonseca said he will have to study for five tests.

The decision to offer 24-hour operations came after library directors consulted with representatives of UOSA, the Student Congress, the Graduate Student Senate and the University Libraries Student Advisory Council, Engel said.

"It would be a great place to come study," she said. "We really want students to take advantage of this."
