OU music and dance schools collaborate to produce 'Carmina Burana'

"Carmina Burana" Rehearsal

(Left to right) Dancers Ashley Coffin, Robert Montgomery, guest artist Nathan Young and dancer Isaac Martinez rehearse for "Carmina Burana" April 25. The show is part of the Sutton Concert Series at the Sharp Concert Hall in the Catlett Music Center.

OU Schools of Music and Dance are coming together this weekend to perform "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. The show will feature vocal music, orchestral and dance students for the collaboration.

The vocal music aspect of the production will feature the Oklahoma Festival Ballet, OU University Chorale, Women’s Chorus, Men’s Glee Club, instrumentalists and the Norman's Children Choir.

The performance will also feature powerful and iconic music played by OU's orchestra, conducted by Richard Zielinski and choreographed by Mary Margaret Holt and Steve Brule, according to a press release.

In addition, the production of "Carmina Burana" will feature OU alumnus Nathan Young, who is currently a dancer at Nashville Ballet.

Young will be performing the lead role of "the lover" and finds the score to be incredibly powerful.

“Regardless of whether you’re dancing any version or choreography of 'Carmina,' it’s hard not to be emotionally invested because of the nature of Orff’s score," Young said. "The lyrics and plot of the poetry make it easier to connect to the music and to dance a role, whatever it might be."

The show will be performed this weekend in Sharp Concert Hall in Catlett Music Center. Tickets are $9 dollars for adults and $5 dollars for students, senior adults, OU employees and military.

The production will also be livestreamed through OU Outreach Video and Media Services on YouTube.

CORRECTION: "Carmina Burana" is not a part of the Sutton Concert Series and choreography is by Mary Margaret Holt and Steve Brule, not James Clouser. The article has been changed to reflect this.
