Oklahoma freshman running back Joe Mixon has been suspended from the team for the entire 2014 season, according to a statement from the university.
Mixon was charged on Friday with one misdemeanor count of acts resulting in gross injury stemming from an altercation between himself and a female student on campus corner in July.
He was arraigned Monday afternoon and released without bond, but ordered to be booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center.
President Boren accepted the recommendation of OU athletic director Joe Castiglione and coach Bob Stoops and issued the season-long suspension. Mixon will not be allowed to participate in any team activities and will be removed from the roster.
According to the statement, Mixon will be allowed to stay on as a student at the university, “with appropriate conditions,” and will be eligible for financial aid.
Castiglione and Stoops said, “As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way. As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff.”
Mixon was expected to compete for playing time with returning backs Keith Ford, Alex Ross and Daniel Brooks, along with true freshman Samaje Perine, before he was suspended from team activities following the incident.
