Former Oklahoma and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield made a donation to the Space Coast High School football program in Cocoa, FL.

The Space Coast Vipers had been facing significant challenges with outdated equipment and limited resources, threatening the safety and morale of their young players.

After learning that the team was struggling financially and lacked proper equipment, Mayfield and his wife, Emily, donated $17,900 to purchase new helmets.

That donation helped spark a turnaround.

The Vipers finished 1-8 last season, but improved their record to 9-3 this year and are heading to the SSAA 1A State Championship for the first time.

“I get chills just thinking about it,” Mayfield said in a press conference with Tampa Bay media on Wednesday. “All we did was give them some helmets — they did the rest. They believed in it, and that’s what football is all about. It teaches life lessons about handling adversity and pushing forward.

“Congrats to them. It’s pretty special.”
