Oklahoma and defensive coordinator Ted Roof agreed to part ways on Thursday.

Roof joined the Sooners ahead of the 2022 season, shortly after head coach Brent Venables was hired, and coached OU's linebackers the past two seasons. Roof's defense struggled during OU's 6-7 campaign in 2022, allowing 30 points per game and 461 yards per game, which ranked 98th and 121st nationally, respectively.

The Sooners improved in 2023, where they conceded 23.5 points and 389.4 yards per game, ranking 46th and 78th, respectively. Venables offered for Roof to remain on staff with OU in a different role, which he declined.

"I told him Wednesday I made a decision to go in a new direction at defensive coordinator and offered him an opportunity to remain on our staff in a different role," Venables said per a press release. "He explained that he has a deep desire to keep coaching and will look to do that at a different school."

Venables also said OU's search to fill the vacated defensive coordinator role with begin immediately.
