No. 18 Oklahoma (4-2, 1-2 SEC) fell to No. 1 Texas (6-0, 2-0) 34-3 on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.

Here are three takeaways from the Sooners’ loss:

Second quarter collapse

At the end of the first quarter, the OU defense had allowed the Longhorns to manage just 13 yards of total offense. 

Once the second quarter began, Texas’ offense found its rhythm.

The Longhorns offense was able to gain 222 total yards of offense in the second quarter, while averaging 10.1 yards per play. Texas was able to have three touchdown drives in the second quarter, and scored twice in the last three minutes in the first half.

The Longhorns rushed for 113 yards and threw for 109 yards. They gained eight first downs and were 3-5 on third down.

Through three SEC games, the Sooners have been outscored 44-0 in the second quarter.

Offensive struggles

Once again, Oklahoma’s offense was unable to get anything going consistently all day.

OU was only able to gain 107 yards of total offense in the first half, and 129 total yards in the second half.

On the ground, OU’s leading rusher was junior running back Jovantae Barnes, who had 38 yards on 14 attempts. As a team, OU averaged 1.8 yards per carry.

Oklahoma could not capitalize through the passing game, as true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. only threw for 147 yards, while also being sacked five times.

Costly turnovers

Through two drives in the second quarter, the Sooners had punted both times while gaining a combined 34 yards.

After Texas extended its lead to 14-3, OU started to unravel with multiple turnovers.

Hawkins had fumbled with 1:51 remaining in the first half, and the Longhorns would then score on the very next play from 43 yards out, to make it 21-3. 

On OU’s next possession, true freshman running back Taylor Tatum fumbled on his first carry of the game, which led to another Texas touchdown.

Texas junior quarterback Quinn Ewers had a 1-yard rushing touchdown to give the Longhorns a 34-3 lead in the fourth.

Texas senior place kicker Bert Auburn makes a 29-yard field goal. 

3Q (1:01) - Texas 24, OU 3 

Texas senior place kicker Bert Auburn makes a 41-yard field goal to notch the first score of the second half and put the Longhorns up by 21. 

Halftime - Texas 21, OU 3

Texas senior place kicker Bert Auburn misses a 44-yard field goal to end the first half. 

The Longhorns have 235 yards on offense, and junior quarterback Quinn Ewers is 13 of 17 for 122 yards and one touchdown. Oklahoma finished the half with 107 total yards on offense, and freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. is 6 of 10 for 51 yards. 

OU will get the ball after halftime. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables confirmed at half time that Hawkins Jr. will start the second half.

2Q (1:40) - Texas 21, OU 3 

After Oklahoma freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. fumbled on OU's 43-yard line, Texas sophomore running back Quintrevion Wisner rushed 43-yards for a touchdown. 

2Q (2:21) - Texas 14, OU 3 

OU's Robert Spears-Jennings forced Texas sophomore running back Quintrevion Wisner to fumble. However, Texas senior wide receiver Silas Bolden recovered it in the end zone, giving the Longhorns a 14-3 lead.

2Q (11:20) - Texas 7, OU 3 

Texas junior quarterback Quinn Ewers found senior tight end Gunnar Helm in the end zone on a seven yard pass to put Texas up 7-3. Texas' drive last 10 plays and went 75 yards. 

1Q (0:10) - OU 3, Texas 0

Redshirt senior kicker Tyler Keltner makes a 42-yard field goal, giving OU an early 3-0 lead. 

Highlights  

Senior defensive back Billy Bowman grabs an interception on Texas' first drive of the game. 

Injury Update 

  • Per the injury report released by OU at 1 p.m. on Saturday, OU will be without nine players.

  • OU will be misisng wide receivers Jayden Gibson, Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony and Deion Burks. 

  • Defensive backs Gentry Williams and Kendel Dolby are listed as out. 

  • Tight end Kade McIntyre and offensive lineman Geirean Hatchett are also out. 

  • Texas will be without running backs CJ Baxter, Christian Clark and Velton Gardner.
