Oklahoma’s incoming freshmen class begins its first day of college Monday.
Amongst the campus’ newcomers will be three-star defensive tackle Du’Vonta Lampkin.
According to Lampkin’s mother Vanessa, her son is enrolled at the university and will exclusively be an OU student for the moment.
Du’Vonta Lampkin originally signed with the University of Texas earlier this year. However, he wasn’t able to meet UT’s foreign language requirement.
“Du’Vonta needed to have three semesters of Spanish by the end of May and they wanted him to do them online,” Vanessa Lamkpin said in a telephone interview. “I told them it was impossible, but they wanted him to go ahead and try. He tried, but as you can see, we were not successful in completing those three."
The academic hiccup prompted Lampkin to request a release from his letter of intent, but his mother indicated Texas wasn’t cooperative with granting his release.
Du’Vonta Lampkin’s letter of intent, however, would be null and void when classes start at Texas and the university sends Lampkin a letter denying his admission.
Lampkin and his family aren’t allowed contact with Oklahoma’s football program until he’s fully released. However, his mother said he’s ready to close this chapter in his life and put it behind him.
“Could it have been avoided? Maybe,” Vanessa Lampkin said. “But at the end of the day, my son is in school, he’s going to get an education and he’s at peace.”
A University of Oklahoma athletics spokesperson was not able to comment on Lampkin's decision as of Friday afternoon.
