Oklahoma basketball: Lon Kruger adds son to coaching staff

Head basketball coach Lon Kruger

HOUSTON — Head basketball coach Lon Kruger argues with a referee during the game against Villanova April 2. The Sooners trailed behind Villanova at the end of the first half.

Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger has added his son, Kevin Kruger, to his coaching staff as an assistant, the Sooners basketball coach announced Wednesday.

“We’re very pleased to have Kevin join our Oklahoma staff,” Lon Kruger said in a press release. “His experience playing professionally around the world combined with his time at Northern Arizona gives him a great base from which to work. His ability to relate with elite student-athletes mixed with his passion for player development will make him a great fit in Norman.”

Kevin Kruger was previously an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University and played under Lon at UNLV during the 2006-07 season after playing his first three years at Arizona State. He also had professional stints in Bulgaria, Italy, China, Mexico, Belgium and Germany.

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to join this elite program,” Kevin Kruger said in a press release. “Being so close to it the past five years, I have a great feel for the culture and atmosphere. I’m prepared to come in and contribute to that in any way possible to help keep this program performing at the highest level.”

The Sooners are expected to hire one more assistant coach this offseason. Prior to the Final Four, Lon lost two of his longtime assistants in Steve Henson and Lew Hill. Henson took the vacant head coaching position at UTSA while Hill accepted the same position at UT Rio Grande Valley.
