Oklahoma’s men’s tennis beat No. 3 Baylor for the third time this season, moving to 21-1 and 3-0 versus the Bears.
The Sooners lost the doubles point for the ninth time this season; their lone loss of the season came in a match in which they lost the doubles point.
The first single match to end was on court two where sophomore Andrew Harris won 6-2, 7-5, tying the match at 1 a piece.
Next, on court four, sophomore Alex Ghilea won his match 6-3, 6-3, giving OU it’s first lead of the dual at 2-1.
After losing the first set, senior Dane Webb won the second set 6-2, and broke his opponent’s serve late to force a tiebreak in the third set. After a crowd misconduct from Baylor’s fans gave Webb an extra tiebreak point and some clutch play, the senior won the tiebreak 7-4, awarding him the match, and extending OU’s match lead to 3-1.
However, Baylor was not done, while on court 6, Florin Bragusi lost 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, narrowing the Sooner’s lead to 3-2.
Baylor was trying to become only the second team this season to score three singles matches on OU; the only other team that had achieved that feat was Texas A&M, which was the sole loss on the Sooner’s schedule.
Finally, in fitting fashion, courts 1 and 5 both came down to simultaneous match points. Freshman Spenser Papa lost on court 5 in his tiebreak, only to have the junior Axel Alvarez pull out his match in epic fashion, giving OU it’s third win over Baylor in as many games this year.
This is OU’s ninth win over a top-10 team, with no top-10 losses.
The Sooners return to action against No. 23 Texas Tech April 12th at 2 pm in Lubbock.
