No. 10 Oklahoma (2-0) defeated Virginia (1-1) 95-51 at the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday.

Here are three takeaways from the Sooners’ win:

Oklahoma continues to struggle behind the 3-point line

Against the Cavaliers, the Sooners went 6 for 32 from 3-point range.

In their season opener against Southern, the team had the same problem and went 3 for 22 on 3-pointers.

“I think we’re trying a little too hard,” head coach Jennie Baranzyck said. “I think we got a little stuck.”

Redshirt senior forward Skylar Vann, junior center Raegan Beers, senior guard Payton Verhulst and sophomore forward Sahara Williams were the only Sooners who scored from behind the 3-point line. Vann and Verhuslt both made two while Beers and Williams both sank one.

Beers dominated on the floor Friday night.

In the first half alone, the center posted 18 points and 11 rebounds, achieving the fastest double-double in program history since 2015.

Beers pushed her way through the Cavaliers’ defense multiple times to grab rebounds and score inside the paint.

“I think what makes her special is she knows the game,” Baranczyk said about Beers. “She knows herself. I don’t even think she’s really tapped in yet, and it took her a little bit to fit in with the team, because she’s such a culture, chemistry person, so everybody on the team loves her.”

At the end of the night, the All-American scored 26 points, reaching 1,000 points in her career. She also came down with 14 rebounds and two assists.

Miscommunications evident on offense

On offense, Oklahoma had quite a few miscommunications against Virginia. The Sooners had a couple missed passes or players out of position.

“Honestly, especially this time of year, there’s going to be a lot of miscommunication. There’s going to be a lot of learning as we go,” Baranczyk said. “Especially when the game lights are on and it’s early in the season, and we’re playing different combinations and different people. So I think we’re just working through a lot of stuff.”

The Cavaliers played the Sooners hard on both sides of the ball, not allowing them to relax and forcing them to stay on their feet throughout the duration of the game.

The Sooners did not let that discourage them and were able to win with 95 points, 66 rebounds and 24 assists. On defense, the Sooners played with aggression and collected 16 steals, forcing Virginia to commit 21 turnovers.

Next, Oklahoma will play Western Carolina (2-0) at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Lloyd Noble Center on SEC Network+.
