OU’s historical libraries are constantly adapting themselves to modern times. Through consistent maintenance of the building and updating its resources, University Libraries creates a more accessible environment for students, according to staff.
Denise Stephens, dean of University Libraries, began her OU career in May 2021. She noted some of the biggest changes in her four years on campus, specifically in the Bizzell Memorial Library.
“What we see is more intensive in an increasing number of ways that students are actually integrating technology into their student life, and that means into their academic work,” Stephens said.
Stephens said she has noticed a steady rise in student attendance at the library. According to Stephens, students often utilize group study locations, the Library MakerSpace and individual research consultations.
Stephens shared that maintenance of the library’s architecture is also a constant project.
Stephens said the 2023 remodeling of the Research Help Desk created a new, inviting environment. Renovations were made to the library’s third and fourth floors as well in 2024, according to Stephens.
In total, these updates cost $1.7 million, but Stephens said it’s important to keep the library updated.
“It’s not a warehouse, it’s a place for people,” Stephens said.
Stephens said while many students use the library’s resources frequently, a vast majority might be unaware of all the resources offered. This drives another priority of the staff: keeping students informed of the tools available to them.
“We’re working with our colleagues … at marketing and communications, to really ramp up and to be more effective in making sure that students know what they can do here, what kind of support they can get here, and to make it clear that we are serious about supporting their needs,” Stephens said.
OU Libraries often meets with the Student Advisory Council and Student Government Association to receive feedback from students on necessary improvements and accommodations. OU Libraries also sends out surveys in addition to the ongoing Student Experience in the Research University survey.
The Student Experience in the Research University Survey is available to all OU students and provides administration with information on ways to better student life. The survey will be available until June 14.
Stephens said the best way to contact the library is through the OU Libraries Research Help Desk, with staff always on duty and walk-ins encouraged during the Bizzell Memorial Library’s open hours. OU Libraries’ website also provides virtual help underneath the services tab, where students can schedule appointments.
