The OU Gender + Equality Center has released a video promoting the application for peer educators.
The job of a peer educator for the Gender + Equality Center is to assist with various gender violence prevention presentations, program coordinator Bliss Brown said. The deadline to apply for the peer educator position in March 15.
The primary job of the peer educators is to facilitate Step In, Speak Out presentations which are given to all first year students and new members of sororities and fraternities, Brown said.
Peer Educator Shannon Slankard, a senior psychology student, encourages students to apply for the position regardless of previous experience.
“I really describe it as the best experience I’ve ever had in my college career,” Slankard said. “I really like engaging with students and then receiving feedback from them, letting us know the presentation went great and how it impacted them, even if it’s one student.”
The educators will also assist in facilitating in a new workshop on campus called “Zoom In,” which will address gender based violence in specific communities as well as other presentations and workshops around campus, Brown said.
When hiring for the position, the Gender + Equality Center is seeking students with at least a 2.5 GPA, public speaking experience, good time management and some knowledge in sexual violence, Brown said.
“Interviews will include questions about their knowledge in sexual violence, but they don’t need to be an expert ... obviously that’s part of the training,” Brown said.
