Newsroom

The transition to the newsroom from the advertising/marketing portion of our space. The four big-screen TVs can convert to a single screen, a nice feature on OU game days.

This year, the nation faces a great decision as Americans head to the polls in November. As we have for over 100 years, we plan to keep our community informed with high quality journalism. As we head into an election, our staff has a few updates we want to share with readers.

Election coverage: Ahead of the 2024 general election, the Daily’s news desk is working on its plan of how to cover upcoming elections in a way that best serves this community.

We are proud to announce that reporter Kevin Eagleson will be serving as OU Daily’s Washington, D.C., correspondent. While also reporting with Gaylord News in Washington, Eagleson will lead a monthly column for OU Daily during this election season. Eagleson has worked at OU Daily since spring 2023 and primarily covered city council and city investigations.

Eagleson said he’s excited for the opportunity to serve OU Daily from Washington during an election year.

“It's going to allow for a little more in-depth, on-the-ground coverage, as well as some more unique coverage that hasn't been done with the Daily in the past,” Eagleson said. “Getting the perspective from inside the political machine is just going to be something that enhances our coverage overall.”

This semester, OU Daily will have an election team to cover local, state and national elections. With the inclusion of national reporting from Eagleson, senior reporter Thomas Pablo and junior reporters Abby Young and Tristen Lewis will lead the charge on local and state elections.

Our values: OU Daily staffers are held to professional media ethical standards, whether they cover elections, campus matters, sports or culture. OU Daily staffers are not allowed to cover stories in which they have conflicts of interest, such as interviewing someone they know personally, and will be transparent with their reporting methods.

Additionally, staffers at the Daily are not allowed to donate or publicly endorse political candidates in any race or a political cause, no matter what they cover. Daily staffers will not advocate for political causes on their social media pages.

We aim to accurately represent all views and sides in our work with appropriate context, and will never distort or misrepresent facts.

We strive to publish accurate coverage, and we will never publish inaccurate or incorrect information. If you find an error in our coverage, use this form to report that and editors will correct that immediately.

Opinion submissions: The Daily will be taking community-submitted opinion pieces regarding November’s election and its impacts on democracy as well as other local matters. Those can be submitted to the editor-in-chief using the dailyeditor@ou.edu email.

Obituaries: Other initiatives this fall include the launch of the Daily’s obituaries section. These will be housed on our website under the news tab. Community members can submit obituaries, which we will run for free, using this form.

Take-down policy: As a reminder, OU Daily has a take-down policy. Individuals can appeal to a newsroom committee to have articles and names removed from previous articles if those pieces are unduly inhibiting their lives years after publication. We’re looking forward to another successful year here at the OU Daily. The students in this newsroom are dedicated to serving Norman and OU’s campus as we navigate the coming year.
