OU's Board of Regents has issued a statement disagreeing with Regent Kirk Humphreys' comments relating homosexuality to pedophilia during a Dec. 10 airing of KFOR's Flashpoint.
Regents chairman Clayton Bennett issued the following statement Dec. 11:
“The Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma is charged with the honorable duty of care and loyalty to our beloved institution. We take great pride in the value of the many diverse perspectives, backgrounds and experiences of our students, faculty and professional staff. The Board disagrees with the recent public statements made by Regent Kirk Humphreys regarding homosexuality and we reiterate our commitment to fairness and inclusion throughout the University community.”
Other campus leaders and organizations, including OU President David Boren, have expressed disapproval for Humphreys' comments. The OU Queer Student Association has also garnered nearly 250 names supporting a letter that calls for Humphreys' immediate resignation.
The Board of Regents will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 12, during which students plan to protest.
