OU Queer Student Association, backed by hundreds, calls for resignation of Regent Kirk Humphreys

Kirk Humphreys

OU's Queer Student Association is calling for the immediate resignation of OU Regent Kirk Humphreys after he compared homosexuality to pedophilia on a Dec. 10 airing of KFOR's Flashpoint.

Traci Baker, the organization's president, released the following statement Dec. 11.

"OU's Queer Student Association stands in firm opposition to Kirk Humphreys and the homophobic remarks made on KFOR's Flashpoint on Dec. 10th.

The University of Oklahoma should be a place of inclusion and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals and having a member of the Board of Regents attribute the moral decline of America to members of the LGBTQ+ community is unacceptable.

OU's Queer Student Association is calling for the immediate resignation of Kirk Humphreys from the Board of Regents, and is issuing this open letter alongside members of the LGBTQ community of OU and its allies to do so."

The letter is signed by Baker and the QSA executive team as well as Troy Stevenson, director of the LGBTQ advocacy non-profit Freedom Oklahoma, and Joe Sangirardi, president of OU's LGBTQ alumni society.

An additional 235 student, faculty, staff and alumni names are also included in support of the letter. Baker said via email that the list is still growing. Anyone who wishes to add their name in support of the letter can contact Baker at tracibaker328@ou.edu or reach out to any member of the QSA executive team.

Other campus leaders and organizations, including President David Boren, have expressed disapproval for Humphreys' remarks, but have not yet called for resignation.
