A man is being held on a first-degree murder charge and two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon after a shooting in southeast Norman.

The same man is believed to have committed an attack with a sword at Buddha Mind Monastery in Oklahoma City earlier in the day, Norman police confirmed to the Daily late Sunday after it was first reported by News9. That attack, after a man was asked to leave the monastery, left a woman in critical condition.

The Norman Police Department early Sunday evening identified the suspect as Mark Shepherd, 25, who authorities said on Saturday afternoon entered a house in the 1300 block of Torrey Pines Road and shot three family members — one adult male and two adult females — before leaving the scene.

The male victim died as a result of his injuries and the two female victims were transported to a hospital in critical condition where they remain hospitalized.

Officers quickly located Shepherd driving in the area of Chautauqua Avenue and Highway 9, and took him into custody with no further incident, according to the release.

The distance between the monastery and the house is about 22 miles by the most direct route.

Shepherd was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center.
