OU students will have access to all the Blizzards they want with the opening of Dairy Queen in the fall.
DLJ Foods 6, Inc. applied for a building permit for a Dairy Queen at 1835 W. Main St, which is currently an empty lot across from Sooner Dairy Lunch and Panera Bread.
The restaurant will offer a new choice in off-campus dining, bringing more variety to Norman’s restaurant scene.
The convenient location, seven minutes away from campus, promises a strong Sooner clientele, according to Dairy Queen proprietor David Jones.
“The reason we chose that particular area is that is has a tremendous amount of history. The shops have been there for a very long time," Jones said. "There is an established customer base in the area and a loyal customer base who appreciate the service and will reward you by coming back frequently.”
The fast food franchise is famous for its sweet soft-serve Blizzards, but also carries a popular $5 lunch combo and everything from salads and sandwiches to hot desserts served with ice cream.
The opening date for the new Norman location has been tentatively set as Oct. 15 of this year, but barring severe weather, Jones expressed the possibility of a September opening.
“There is a lot of potential in the area, it has been seeing a resurgence and that’s something in the community that we would like to be a part of,” Jones said.
