If you listen to 94.7 The Buzz, then lately you've been hearing a lot of the song "Dirty Hot Girl" from the band Falcon Five-O. The group won the The Buzz's "Battle of the Bands" and the hit song has been in the top slots on the request line since its release.The quartet of Charlie Holt, bass player; J. Falcon Powell, lead vocals and guitar; Mike Simon, drummer, and Craig Clevenger, lead guitar, have been playing together for about a year. And what a year it has been.The group won the State Fair Battle of the Bands this past summer -- after Holt had only been playing with them a few months -- and they recently beat over 200 bands to take the Buzz title.The band was fairly confident that it had a good enough sound to take home the title."I thought if we made it to the finals, we had a good shot of winning," Holt said of the Buzz Battle.Falcon Five-0 won a sound system from Guitar City, 15 hours of recording studio time and -- most important to the band -- radio airplay. Since winning, the band has noticed differences that come with success: being contacted by a recording label."The whole reason we've been contacted [by a label] is because of our radio airplay," Holt said.Powell said that with more success comes more administration, "so we're in the process of deputizing some imps to do some of the work for us."Besides the success the battle victory brought, the band feels confident in its talent without any help."I think we have fun, rock and roll songs," Simon said.Powell describes the band's sound as "sexy rock," and credits Holt's "sexual vibe" for the band's success. "We're a refreshing escape from the introspective, mad-at-your-dad rock music that's been dominating rock and roll," Powell said. "We're not mad at anyone."The band has already released a debut CD entitled "Tales from the Heartland" which features the track "Dirty Hot Girl," and the band is currently recording its next CD to be entitled "Manual to Hard Living" to be released this fall."When we play, we write a new chapter in what we call the Manual to Hard Living," Powell said.Holt said the theme of excess is important to "Hard Living." "There's an easy way to live and a hard way to live and the hard way has to do with excess," Holt said. "No sleep, running on alcohol, playing too much.""You might as well live as hard as you can, every chance you can," Powell said. "It's like extreme living."The band's winning sound is not its only asset, its live show is a like icing on the cake."When you see a Falcon Five-O show, it's really a two-for-one deal," Powell said. "You get the music and the comedy. You can't afford not to see a Falcon Five-O show, really."Clevenger said anyone in the audience could be a target."If you don't get the joke, then you may be the punch line," Powell said. "With everything we do, there's a wink. A lot of people take us at face value and miss the inherent humor that we see and that we put into it."Falcon Five-O will be playing tonight at 8 p.m. on Walker-Adams Mall, Friday at the Belle Isle Brewery, and Saturday at Don Pablo's in Norman.hello there & you too
