Oklahoma women's basketball: Shaina Pellington named Big 12 Freshman of Year

Oklahoma freshman guard Shaina Pellington has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

This is one of many accolades she has earned in her young career, which includes being on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, and four-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week.

Pellington was the top scoring freshman in the Big 12 averaging 13.1 points per game and ranks third among Division 1 freshman in field goal percentage with 49.1 percent. The freshman also led all players in her class with 20 plus points in seven games.

Oklahoma has produced seven Big 12 Freshman of the Year winners — the most of any team in the Big 12. Before Pellington, the last player to win the award was current teammate, Gabbi Ortiz, who won it in 2015. Other winners include Whitney Hand in 2009, Danielle Robinson in 2008, Courtney Paris in 2006, Chelsi Welch in 2003, and LaNeisha Caufield in 1999.

All players have been awarded Big 12 Freshman of the Year under current head coach Sherri Coale.
