OU football conducted Day 2 of fall camp on Friday, and local media attended the first hour of practice.
Kickoff is 29 days away, as OU will host Illinois State Aug. 30 in Norman.
Here is what OU Daily saw from Friday:
• Redshirt junior quarterback John Mateer broke down the team to start practice and was filled with energy throughout the day.
• Senior Jaydn Ott led the way at running back, showing his big-play ability. Senior Jovantae Barnes and freshman Tory Blaylock were some of the other running backs to get reps. Sophomore Taylor Tatum and sophomore Xavier Robinson had limited showings in practice.
• Redshirt junior wide receiver Jayden Gibson was sidelined on Friday. Gibson missed the 2024 season after suffering an injury prior to the year.
• Redshirt junior Kaden Helms worked with the first team at tight end. Helms has battled injuries the past three seasons and could be a key player at a position the Sooners need someone to step up at.
• Redshirt senior offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu was absent from practice Friday. The first-team offensive line from left to right: senior Jacob Sexton, sophomore Eddy Pierre-Louis, redshirt senior Troy Everett, freshman Ryan Fodje and redshirt senior Derek Simmons.
• Head coach Brent Venables was predominately around the defense during practice, as Venables will be calling the plays on defense this season.
• Redshirt senior Kendal Daniels, redshirt junior Kobie McKinzie and redshirt junior Kip Lewis led the way at linebacker.
• Sophomore defensive back Reggie Powers III performed drills with the defensive backs and linebackers and could find himself a role at the cheetah position.
• Redshirt junior defensive back Gentry Williams led the way at his position group, while sophomore defensive back Eli Bowen was in a boot and did not participate in any drills.
