...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TO 10 PM CDT FRIDAY...

The following statement was issued by the Oklahoma Department of
Environmental Quality.

An Air Quality Alert for Ozone has been issued for Friday, August 28
for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area due to expected high
concentrations of ozone.

Public Health Recommendations: Persons with existing heart or
respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor
activity.

The general public is encouraged to help alleviate the problem by
reducing vehicle miles traveled by riding the bus, carpooling, or
avoiding unnecessary trips. The public is also asked to avoid
refueling during the morning and early afternoon hours, and to avoid
the use of two cycle engines such as lawn mowers, motorcycles, weed
trimmers, and outboard engines. It is also advised to limit outdoor
burning.

Oklahoma football: Bowl games through the 1990s

Throughout its storied history, Oklahoma has played in 48 bowl games, recording 28 victories, 19 losses and a single tie.

As the Sooners approach bowl appearance No. 49 in the Orange Bowl New Year's Eve against Clemson, we're taking a look back at each of OU's postseason games through the decades.

1991 Gator Bowl

OKLAHOMA 48, VIRGINIA 14

1991 Gator Bowl: Oklahoma v. Virginia

FINAL SCORE: 48-14, Oklahoma win

Following a two-year bowl ban stemming from violations during Barry Switzer’s tenure, Oklahoma coach Gary Gibbs led the No. 20 Sooners to an 8-3 record. Despite this, Virginia was favored to win. Oklahoma scored just seven points in the first quarter but blew up the Cavaliers defense in the second and third for a combined 41 points over the span.

Oklahoma dominated this matchup against the Cavaliers despite being slight underdogs in the matchup. The Sooners used a 27-point second quarter to punctuate the win. Taking place in December, this game was the second version of the 1991 Gator Bowl. Michigan and Ole Miss also played in the 1991 Gator Bowl the previous January. 

1993 John Hancock Bowl

OKLAHOMA 41, TEXAS TECH 10

1993 John Hancock Bowl: Oklahoma v. Texas Tech

FINAL SCORE: 41-10, Oklahoma win

Oklahoma picked up its fourth win over the Southwest Conference in 1993 against Texas Tech in the John Hancock Bowl. Quarterback Cale Gundy completed 15 of 26 passes for 215 yards and three scores, a then-school record for touchdowns in a bowl game. “We are the SWC champions of 1993,” Sooners nose tackle Ricky Wren boldly declared after the game. The 41-10 victory capped a 9-3 campaign for Gary Gibbs’ squad.

The Sooners ran away from the Red Raiders, their second bowl win under head coach Garry Gibbs. Quarterback was named MVP of the game for his three-touchdown performance. 

1994 Copper Bowl

BYU 31, OKLAHOMA 6

1994 Copper Bowl: Oklahoma v. BYU

FINAL SCORE: 31-6, Oklahoma loss

Brigham Young quarterback John Walsh had a field day against a struggling Sooners secondary in the 1994 Copper Bowl. Walsh completed a 43-yard pass on the first play of the game and proceeded to toss a touchdown in each quarter to down Oklahoma 31-6 in the final game of Gary Gibbs’ career. The quarterback ended 31 of 45, a Copper Bowl record.

In what became the final game of Garry Gibbs' tenure at Oklahoma, the Sooners lost in a blowout to the Cougars. The Cougars were running an offense under head coach LaVell Edwards that heavily influenced what is known today as the air-raid offense. BYU quarterback John Walsh threw for 454 yards and four touchdowns in the win. 

1999 Independence Bowl

OLE MISS 27, OKLAHOMA 25

1999 Independence Bowl: Oklahoma v. Ole Miss

After falling behind 21-3 in the first half, the Sooners used a 15-point third quarter to get back in the game. OU briefly took the lead on a touchdown pass from Josh Heupel with just over two minutes remaining, but the Rebels hit a 39-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. 

The Sooners, under the instruction of offensive coordinator Mike Leach, set an Independence Bowl record for passing yards with 390. Heupel was named Co-MVP of the game.
