With Fall Family Weekend 2024 now underway at OU, Parent & Family Programs is helping families stay connected with their students, even from a distance. This annual event offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate the importance of maintaining strong family ties throughout the college experience.
A Helping Hand Through the Transition
For many families, sending their child off to college can feel like stepping into uncharted territory, a mix of pride and anxiety that marks the "empty nest" transition. Parent & Family Programs, led by Tracy Carlson, helps bridge that gap by providing support and resources to families, making sure they feel connected.
"Our mission is to help families feel like they are still part of their student's journey," said Carlson, coordinator of Parent & Family Programs. "The college years are a time when students grow in their independence, but we want families to know they are a crucial part of that process, and we’re here to guide them."
Parent & Family Programs serves as the go-to resource for families navigating their student’s transition to independence, offering communication tools and access to campus resources. Whether families need to understand academic policies, get updates on campus events, or find ways to support their student, Parent & Family Programs is a lifeline for staying informed.
Sooner Parents: Staying Engaged from Afar
At the heart of this support network is Sooner Parents, an organization designed to keep families involved, even when they are miles away from campus. Sooner Parents President Melissa Medina understands how important it is for families to feel connected during this new chapter of their lives.
"Watching your student become more independent is rewarding, but it also brings moments of uncertainty," said Medina. "Sooner Parents provides a sense of community and reassurance for families. It’s a way to stay engaged with the university, meet other parents and families, find answers to OU related questions, and still feel involved in your student’s experience."
Sooner Parents membership offers exclusive benefits like access to scholarships, discounted event tickets and special communications that keep families in the loop on university happenings. Families also have the chance to participate in key events such as Fall Family Weekend, which has become a beloved tradition for both students and their loved ones.
Fall Family Weekend: A Time for Reunion
Fall Family Weekend is more than just a campus visit; it is a chance to reconnect with their students after weeks or months apart. During Fall Family Weekend 2024, Parent & Family Programs is helping families reconnect with their students and stay engaged, even from afar. This annual event offers a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the importance of maintaining strong family ties throughout the college experience, reinforcing the connection between home and campus life as the semester unfolds.
"This weekend is a time when families can really see how much their students have grown since they left home," said Carlson. "It’s always special to watch families reunite and see them share in the excitement of campus life together."
The event lineup includes the annual Parent & Family Tailgate, which provides a fun, casual atmosphere where families can mingle with other Sooner families and experience the energy of OU’s game day traditions. The weekend also features student performances, informational sessions, and a family-friendly reception, giving families a deeper look into their students' life at OU.
Looking Ahead
As Parent & Family Programs continues to grow, Carlson is committed to strengthening the bond between families and OU. For her, it’s more than just a job – it’s a way to give families peace of mind and ensure they remain a vital part of their student’s journey.
"We want families to know that even as their student becomes more independent, they still have a place at OU," Carlson said. "We are here to help them navigate these exciting yet sometimes challenging years. Families are an important part of our OU community, and their involvement is invaluable to their students’ success."
