Norman tornado that developed southwest of 24th Avenue Northwest and Robinson Street, hitting the Max Westheimer Airport Saturday night has been declared an EF1 by the National Weather Service.
It formed at 9:29 p.m. with peak wind up to 90-95 miles per hour. The total length of the tornado extended to 3.5 miles before stopping between 12th Avenue Northeast and Tecumseh Road at 9:36 p.m.
Jacob Guthrie, media specialist at OU Communications, wrote in a statement to OU Daily there was minor damage to the airport.
“We are continuing to assess minor damage at Max Westheimer Airport stemming from Saturday’s severe weather,” Guthrie wrote. “There were several hangars and aircraft with slight damage.”
An additional EF2 tornado was reported just south of the Riverwind Casino, right outside of Cleveland County. The tornado traveled 5 miles before stopping east of Interstate 35, south of the Highway 9 interchange.
The National Weather Service reported a total of 22 tornadoes touched down during the storms which took place Saturday evening injuring at least 100 people across the state and leaving up to 6,800 without power.
One EF4 tornado was reported in Marietta, and one EF3 was reported in Sulphur, along with confirmed EF0 tornadoes on the northwest side of Stillwater and Newkirk.
In total, the tornadoes killed four people. Two in Holdenville, one in Sulphur, and one in Marietta. 100 injuries have been reported across the state.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt declared a state of emergency in Carter, Cotton, Garfield, Hughes, Kay, Lincoln, Love, Murray, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne and Pontotoc county Sunday.
