The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Cleveland County.
Throughout the morning, significant flash flooding has occurred at Elm Avenue and Lindsey Street where traversing through the water has become difficult for vehicles. Flooding has also occurred on OU's campus near Jenkins Avenue.
The National Weather Service has described the flooding as “life threatening flash flooding” produced by thunderstorms. There is flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.
The National Weather Service advises residents to be aware of surroundings and not drive on flooded roads. Turn around to avoid drowning when encountering flooded roads because most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
The National Weather Service has indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain between 1 and 3 inches and the possibility of additional rainfall of up to 1 inch in the warned area.
The city of Norman reminds residents during floods to have an emergency kit, including flashlight and water on hand. The city cautions against travel in low lying areas prone to localized flooding and not to drive into standing water.
