A law enforcement officer has been released from the hospital after being reportedly taken to OU Medical Center following a collision in southeast Norman Friday night that left another driver dead.

Norman Police Department confirmed to OU Daily in a Friday text that, at approximately 11:10 p.m. Friday, officers responded to reports of an injury collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of Cedar Lane Road and Classen Boulevard.

Officer reportedly taken to OU Medical Center following crash

Jeremy Walker, Cleveland County Sheriff's Office public information officer, wrote in a Saturday email to the Daily that at roughly 10:33 p.m. Friday, sheriff's office personnel were responding to an assistance request involving an officer engaged in a physical struggle with a suspect during an arrest.

While responding to assist, a sheriff's office deputy was involved in the collision. Walker wrote the deputy involved was treated for injuries and later released from the hospital.

In a Monday email, NPD wrote the initial investigation indicates the deputy was traveling south on Classen Boulevard and the county vehicle's "lights and sirens were on at the time of the collision."

NPD wrote the driver of the other vehicle sustained significant injuries and was pronounced dead.

"We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident," Walker wrote.

Daily reporters spoke to Brandon Rossiter, a witness who was interviewed by officers at the scene. Rossiter said, after he gave his statement, NPD told him the involved officer was taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City for treatment. OU Medical Center is the state’s only Level I trauma center.

At 1:04 a.m. Daily reporters observed a vehicle labeled with the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner logo arrive at the scene.

NPD wrote the collision remains under investigation.
