Stillwater natives Billy Bonney performed their latest album, “As the Canyons Roar,” at Copeland Corner ahead of their album release party March 28.
Lead singer Kurtis Hair and bassist Felix Miller met through a Facebook ad Hair posted about putting together a band. The two hit it off and created the project “Billy Bonney.” Hair credited the band's name to Billy the Kid, as it was one of his aliases. Hair said, “there were a lot of parallels between that story in the past to what’s happening politically in our country, and I’ve always been an outspoken, lefty hippie, so we stuck with the name.”
The then-two-piece band went through a few drummers before meeting Gregg Miller in 2025. With three practices together, the band performed at Bluebonnet Bar for Norman Music Festival.
The Copeland Corner series, inspired by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, highlights local and student artists through stripped-down performances in the OU Daily newsroom. Full video performances are posted every other Wednesday.
