State Question 846 asks voters to amend the state Constitution to require proof of identity for any method of voting. It would also allow lawmakers to enact any laws required to specify the needed ID. State law already requires voters to provide identification in order to vote.
Supporters say:
This will further ensure the integrity of Oklahoma’s elections.
This is needed to ensure future Legislatures do not remove the voter identification requirement.
Critics say:
It would give lawmakers expanded power over elections, including voting by mail.
Oklahoma already has secure elections, so this would do little to improve election security.
Future Legislatures could weaponize the change to make voter identification requirements so strict that they disenfranchise voters.
