...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TO 10 PM CDT FRIDAY...

The following statement was issued by the Oklahoma Department of
Environmental Quality.

An Air Quality Alert for Ozone has been issued for Friday, August 28
for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area due to expected high
concentrations of ozone.

Public Health Recommendations: Persons with existing heart or
respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor
activity.

The general public is encouraged to help alleviate the problem by
reducing vehicle miles traveled by riding the bus, carpooling, or
avoiding unnecessary trips. The public is also asked to avoid
refueling during the morning and early afternoon hours, and to avoid
the use of two cycle engines such as lawn mowers, motorcycles, weed
trimmers, and outboard engines. It is also advised to limit outdoor
burning.

app.

OU's Mark Allen Everett Poetry Series to host 2 poetry readings in Norman

The Mark Allen Everett Poetry Series at OU will host two poetry readings in March by visiting professors.

Brent Newsom, assistant professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, will read selections from his poetry on the OU campus March 7. Alan Michael Parker, who teaches English at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, will read his work at Mainsite Contemporary Art Gallery in Norman on March 15.

The Mark Allen Everett Poetry Series began in 2007 with an endowment to OU. The series regularly sponsors readings, signings and other events to promote poetry in the Norman-Oklahoma City area.

Sara Wilson, a literary and cultural studies graduate student, serves as graduate assistant for the series. She said the readings allow listeners to connect with a medium many find inaccessible.

“It’s assumed poetry is ‘out there,’ it’s difficult or something like that,” Wilson said. “But usually what you find at a poetry reading is that poetry becomes more accessible, more interesting.”

Both readings are free and open to the public. Newsom will read at 7 p.m. March 7 in Cate Center 2, room 223. The Mainsite Gallery, where Parker will read at 7 p.m. March 15, is located at 122 E. Main St. in Norman. More information can be found at the poetry series’ Facebook page.
