...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TO 10 PM CDT FRIDAY...

The following statement was issued by the Oklahoma Department of
Environmental Quality.

An Air Quality Alert for Ozone has been issued for Friday, August 28
for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area due to expected high
concentrations of ozone.

Public Health Recommendations: Persons with existing heart or
respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor
activity.

The general public is encouraged to help alleviate the problem by
reducing vehicle miles traveled by riding the bus, carpooling, or
avoiding unnecessary trips. The public is also asked to avoid
refueling during the morning and early afternoon hours, and to avoid
the use of two cycle engines such as lawn mowers, motorcycles, weed
trimmers, and outboard engines. It is also advised to limit outdoor
burning.

Oklahoma City Zoo to offer free admission July 10 for Sales Tax Appreciation Day

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden will offer guests free admission on Sales Tax Appreciation Day, according to an OKC Zoo press release.

On Tuesday, July 10, the OKC zoo will offer free admission to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the one-eighth of a cent sales tax passed for the zoo by Oklahoma City citizens. While admission is free, all rides and attractions will be regularly priced, according to the release.  

The sales tax law passed in 1990 has allowed multiple improvements to the park including a lion overlook, cat forest, children’s zoo, elephant habitat, 6.6 acre sanctuary Asia Habitat and the Joan Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital.   

“We are extremely grateful to the people of Oklahoma City for their ongoing commitment to the Zoo. It’s a commitment we take seriously,” Dwight Lawson, executive director and CEO of the zoo, said in the release. “We work constantly to ensure the zoo provides a world class experience to guests, creates meaningful educational experiences and supports conservation efforts that protect wildlife and wild places for future generations.”
