Oklahoma (35-3, 13-2 Big 12) lost to Texas (31-6, 11-4) 2-1 on Sunday at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin.

It is the first time since the 2019 Women’s College World Series final that Oklahoma has lost back-to-back games to the same opponent. Furthermore, it’s the first time since 2011 that the Sooners have lost a series to a Big 12 opponent.

Here are three takeaways from the Sooners’ loss:

Fail to respond

Oklahoma found itself in the exact same situation as last night.

Going into the bottom of the fourth, the Sooners were up 1-0, then Texas scored two runs off senior pitcher Nicole May on Saturday.

On Sunday, graduate transfer pitcher Kelly Maxwell gave up a two-run homer to Texas’ Katie Stewart that just cleared the left field fence to put the Longhorns in the lead 2-1. With the loss, Maxwell suffered her first loss in a Sooner uniform.

The Sooners would not threaten offensively for the rest of the day, as Sunday marked the first time Oklahoma lost a series to Texas since 2009.

During the series, the Sooners’ offense only scored seven runs, their lowest in 12 years.

Poor day offensively

After putting up just one run in Saturday’s loss, the Sooners offense struggled again to put up runs on the board on Sunday.

Oklahoma through the first five innings went 2-for-12 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. It was an uncharacteristic day for the Sooners, only putting up six hits and striking out four times.

Texas pitchers Teagan Kavan and Estelle Czech managed to keep Sooner bats quiet, as the top three hitters in Oklahoma’s lineup went a combined 2-for-10 at the plate.

The only run of the day came on a solo homer in the third inning by freshman infielder Ella Parker. Parker was the only player with a multi-hit day for the Sooners, going 2 for 3 at the plate in the loss.

Jayda Coleman robs Texas again

In the bottom of the third inning, senior outfielder Jayda Coleman found herself in a familiar situation.

Texas’ Joley Mitchell hit a fly ball to deep center field, but Coleman leaped at the wall and robbed Mitchell of extra bases. That at bat was the only flyout that Maxwell recorded in the first three innings.

The play was similar to the 2022 Women’s College World Series, where Coleman robbed a home run against the Longhorns.

Next, the Sooners face Wichita State (18-14, 9-6 AAC) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita, Kansas on ESPN+.
