COLUMBIA, Mo. — Oklahoma (5-5, 1-5 SEC) lost to Missouri (7-2, 3-2 SEC) 30-23 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Here are three takeaways from OU’s loss:

OU fumbles

Oklahoma struggled to take care of the ball against Missouri, turning over the ball three times in the first half.

Sophomore starting quarterback Jackson Arnold fumbled on the first drive of the game, recovering the ball on the Oklahoma 25-yard line and forcing OU to punt. However, after a three-and-out by Missouri, Arnold fumbled again on the quarterback keeper, and the Tigers recovered it at the Sooners’ 50-yard line.

OU’s defense was able to hold Missouri, preventing them from scoring, but a muffed punt by sophomore defensive back Peyton Bowen with a little over five minutes to go in the second quarter handed the Tigers the momentum.

Starting at Oklahoma’s own 22-yard line, Missouri was able to earn its lone points of the first half off a 25-yard field goal from redshirt freshman placekicker Blake Craig.

In the second Arnold continued to make questionable decisions with the ball, barely avoiding a pick-six while targeting redshirt junior wide receiver Deion Burks, who is back this week after missing several games due to injury.

Burks also fumbled at Oklahoma’s 30-yard line at the start of the fourth quarter, which led to a Missouri touchdown, giving the Tigers a 16-9 lead.

Arnold had a crucial fumble late in the fourth while the game was tied 23-23. Missouri was able to run it back for a touchdown.

OU finished the night with six fumbles, four of which Missouri recovered. Missouri had two fumbles, losing one of them.

Sooners’ special teams

Oklahoma special teams was the only sign of life for OU on Saturday.

In the first half, redshirt senior kicker Zach Schmit had all of OU’s nine points, making field goals from the 40, 35, and 56-yard lines. Schmit, who took his first attempt of the season during OU’s matchup against Auburn, was four of four heading into the contest.

Redshirt fifth-year punter Luke Elzinga also had several key plays.

In the first quarter, Elzinga faked a punt on fourth-and-six, finding redshirt junior tight end Bauer Sharp for a 43-yard completion.

Elzinga tied Arnold with 43 passing yards in the first half. Missouri graduate student quarterback Drew Pyne had 23.

Oklahoma rallies in fourth, can’t finish

After struggling to score during the first three quarters, OU put together scoring plays on back-to-back drives.

With 3:18 to go in the fourth, freshman running back Taylor Tatum found Arnold for an 18-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 16-16.

Senior defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. then scooped a fumble on the Missouri 40-yard line returning it for a touchdown and giving OU its first lead of the second half.

However, Missouri was able to put together a drive, and former OU wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. found the end zone to tie the game. After OU got the ball back to try to respond, Arnold fumbled and the Tigers ran it back for a touchdown.

During the loss, Missouri had 278 total yards compared to Oklahoma’s 257. Arnold finished the night 15 of 24 for 74 yards.

Former OU wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 10-9 lead.

Redshirt senior kicker Zach Schmit closed out the first half with a career-high 56-yard field goal.

Missouri responded with a 25-yard field goal after recovering Peyton Bowen's fumble on a punt.

Redshirt senior kicker Zach Schmit made a 35-yard field goal. The score was set up by a 4th down stand from OU's defense.

OU 3, Missouri 0 (14:56 2Q)

Redshirt senior Zach Schmit made a 40-yard field goal to give OU a 3-0 lead. Punter Luke Elzinga completed a 43-yard pass to redshirt junior tight end Bauer Sharp on a fake punt to set the Sooners up at the Missouri 10-yard line.

Injury report

Oklahoma wide receivers Deion Burks and Jalil Farooq will return after missing the majority of the season. Junior running back Jovantae Barnes has been ruled out for the game.
