OKLAHOMA CITY – Patty Gasso made it very clear who she would root for if Oklahoma wound up being eliminated from the Women’s College World Series.

“If it’s not gonna be us, I want it to be (Oregon),” Gasso said following Saturday’s loss to Texas. “I’ll say that very clearly and out loud, because they’ve lived in our program.”

Oregon head coach Melyssa Lombardi was an OU assistant for 21 years, before taking the head coaching job at Oregon in 2018. Assistant coach Sydney Romero won two national championships with the Sooners as a player from 2016-19, before becoming a graduate assistant at her alma mater from 2021-22. Associate head coach Sam Marder worked as a volunteer analyst for the 2021 OU team that won a national championship.

In the 2024 Norman Regional, the Sooners eliminated the Ducks en route to their fourth consecutive national championship.

After the game, the two coaching staffs embraced at home plate in the first time Gasso and OU had been matched up against its former proteges.

“It’s a celebration,” Gasso said. “(Lombardi) has been with me for over 20 years, like an older sister to me.”

With the two teams facing off against each other in an elimination game Sunday, it’s a game countless of OU alumni will be tuned in to watch and would be quite the story if the former Sooners assistants knock out the four-time defending champions.

Oregon lost its opening game to UCLA 4-2 on Thursday following a walk-off home run by the Bruins. The Ducks avoided elimination against Mississippi on Friday after a walk-off walk in the 10th inning.

OU won its opening game against Tennessee 4-3 on Thursday after Ella Parker hit a walk-off home run off Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens, before falling to Texas 4-2 on Saturday.

“We know them very well,” Gasso said about the matchup with Oregon. “... But at the same time, there’s absolute mutual respect, which feels good in this game."

“I already know it’s going to be done professionally and the right way, and that means a lot to me.”

The Sooners and Ducks face off at 6 p.m. Sunday at Devon Park on ESPN2.
