Sophomore Tas Hajdu during men's gymnastics meet against Michigan and Simpson on Feb. 15.

Oklahoma men’s gymnastics won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship 329.250-328.950-315.450-313.350 behind sophomore Tas Hajdu’s final performance.

Four teams competed in the MPSF championship Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, including No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Stanford, No. 9 Air Force and No. 10 Cal.

Oklahoma has won 19 MPSF team championships, the most in conference history, with 18 of those coming since the 2000 season. The Sooners' most recent championship came in 2021. Stanford has the second most with seven. The Sooners and Cardinal have combined to win 26 out of the 31 MPSF team championships, with Oklahoma finishing second to Stanford the last three years.

After coming up short in previous years, Oklahoma looked to fend off the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal en route to reclaim the conference title.

The Sooners started on vault, an event they have excelled at all year, ranking second nationally in team rankings. In individual rankings, senior Emre Dodanli ranks fourth, while redshirt junior Fuzzy Benas is tied for ninth.

Dodanli and Benas both had good vaults, with scores of 13.900 and 13.950. Sophomore Tyler Flores led off with a score of 14.050, providing a spark for the Sooners and giving them the lead through the first rotation, 55.500-54.750-53.600-51.850.

Oklahoma competed on parallel bars in rotation two. Sophomore Colin Flores, who ranks 15th individually in the event, led the Sooners off with a score of 13.450. A score of 13.750 and 14.100 from Dodanli and Benas capped off a team score of 54.700 for Oklahoma, extending its lead to 110.200-108.500-106.100-102.800 through rotation two.

Stanford was right behind Oklahoma through the first two rotations, and they would cut the lead after a team score of 56.400 on the floor exercise in rotation three. Oklahoma maintained a .300 point lead, with the scores sitting at 165.200-164.900-158.150-156.300 through three events.

Oklahoma built on its lead on floor in rotation four. Senior Brigham Frentheway stuck and scored a 14.100, and Benas scored a 14.200 with another stuck dismount. Finishing with a team score of 55.050, Oklahoma extended its lead to 220.350-217.500-213.650-207.950.

Rotation five put the Sooners on the pommel horse, one of their stronger events, ranking second nationally. Junior Ignacio Yockers ranked fifth in the event and redshirt senior and co-captain Zach Nunez ranks ninth. Redshirt sophomore Mac Seyler scored a season-high 13.700, and Yockers anchored with a score of 14.250 for a team score of 54.600.

Stanford chipped away at the Sooners lead in rotation five, bringing Oklahoma’s lead back down to 1.800 points, with the scores at 274.950-273.150-266.200-260.450 heading into the final rotation of the evening.

The MPSF championship would come down to the final event, with Oklahoma on still rings and Stanford on vault. Oklahoma is ranked second nationally on still rings, with senior Matthew Burgoyne ranking third individually and Hajdu ranking fourth.

Burgoyne finished his routine with a score of 14.000, but as Stanford finished on vault, the Cardinal took the lead over the Sooners 328.950-315.100. As the anchor, Hajdu was set up for the biggest routine of his collegiate career, and he delivered on the biggest stage with a score of 14.050, securing the MPSF championship for Oklahoma 329.250-328.950-315.450-313.350.

The MPSF title marked Oklahoma’s 20th all-time and head coach Mark William’s 19th in his career at Oklahoma. Contributing to the win, Benas claimed the event title in parallel bars, and Dodanli took home the event title on horizontal bar.

A dominant performance in Colorado followed a 14-1 regular season for the Sooners.

Next, Oklahoma will compete in the NCAA qualifiers on Friday, April 18 at Ann Arbor, Michigan with the time and channel to be determined.
