OU Daily elected Taylor Jones as its summer editor-in-chief on Friday.
Jones is a journalism senior and currently a senior news reporter for the Daily. She has worked at the Daily since August 2020 and has served as a junior news reporter and assistant news managing editor.
Jones has written about systemic homelessness, the struggles and values of local businesses, women in STEM and the state of marijuana businesses ahead of the State Question 820 election in 2023.
Focusing on business and local news, Jones said she loves telling people’s stories, which is one reason she wants to go into law in the future. Jones will attend OU College of Law in the fall.
“Telling people stories is just so vital to what we do and it's so important and the legal field is just that kind of next step for me because it’s just being able to help people with their stories in a different way,” Jones said.
As the summer editor-in-chief, Jones wants to create a smooth transition for Peggy Dodd, who will serve as the fall-spring editor-in-chief, while keeping up the caliber that previous editors have set.
Jones said she wants the newsroom to continue to be a place where staff can learn and further their careers in journalism, and maintain the standards the Daily has for news coverage.
“I want to keep up the standard of the newsroom as it being a service to the community. We have worked really hard as a newsroom over the past four years … specifically toward our city coverage on the news desk and our coverage of sports as well,” Jones said. “We have gained a whole lot of trust and love from the community by being able to provide that service so I want to make sure that we are keeping that bar high over the summertime.”
Jones will start serving in her position in May after the spring semester ends.
