OU fraternity shut down by national office

  • 1 min to read

OU's chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity could be force to shut its doors after its charter was suspended by the fraternity's national office.

Catherine Bishop, OU's vice president for public affairs, confirmed that the chapter has been shut down due to "rules violation."

Jay Doyle, press secretary and special assistant to OU President David Boren, said he did not know the specific reason the chapter was shut down but he believed "repeat offenses" led the national office to suspend the chapter's charter.

The chapter will have 30 days to appeal the national office's decision.

Members of Kappa Sigma have not returned messages seeking comment.

According to the chapter's Web site, Kappa Sigma colonized at OU in 1906. About 40 men live in the Kappa Sigma house. Bishop said the university would work with members of Kappa Sigma who need to find housing before classes resume on Jan. 20.
