Norman Police Department is investigating a potential hate crime in response to a report of a fight on Campus Corner early Sunday morning.

According to Sarah Schettler, NPD public information officer, NPD was notified of a fight on the 500 block of Buchanan Avenue at 1:27 a.m. on Sunday.

According to News 9, the victim was identified as Harrison Hipp.

In an interview with News 9, Hipp said he was walking on Campus Corner before he was approached by a stranger who asked if he could wear Hipp’s cowboy hat.

Hipp said he backed away, removed his hat and his yarmulke he wore underneath. Hipp then refused to relinquish his hat and said he didn’t want to fight. Hipp said he was attacked by multiple men while being called antisemetic slurs.

“They have me on seizure medication because they’re worried I'll have a seizure,” Hipp said in the News 9 interview.

In the statement sent to OU Daily, NPD was notified at 3:20 a.m. of the victim’s location, where they then went to speak to him at a local hospital. NPD verified that several of the victim's possessions were taken during the altercation.

According to Schettler, no arrests have been made, but officers have identified a potential suspect and are currently working to verify all aspects of the altercation and whether it was a possible hate crime.
